Known around the world by the names Pegasus, Windhorse, Buraq, and Devadatta, you, winged-horse capture our imaginations. We dream of you clothed in white feathers and fur, so swift that only lightning could be your name. Prophets rely on your guidance. A wellspring of dreams, you carry souls to the heavens, a symbol of the soul itself. Not all lightness, you lend us your power to defeat the darkness. Some say your mother was a monster. Poison and purity, darkness and light, unity and separation. You grant the freedom to transcend duality and find our place on earth.
Spirit Guide of Artists and Prophets
The winged-horse is a spirit guide to artists of all kinds, providing inspiration for their great works. On Helicon the Greek mountain of muses, Pegasus struck his hoof to the ground. There a magical well named “Hippocrene” appeared as a font of inspiration for artists and poets.
Pegasus is associated with a number of springs in Greece, reminding us that to create we must rely on a “wellspring” of ideas. His name either comes from the the Greek word pêgê meaning "of the spring", or the word pêgazô meaning "sprung forth”. Think of how ideas “spring to mind” [1].
Artists that receive and communicate divine messages need the winged-horse. She grants access to the heavens and opens the way for divine visions.
The winged Buraq carried the prophet Muhammad to heaven on his famous night journey [2]. The Buraq was a white, winged mare, donkey, or mule, who is at times painted with a woman’s head and peacock’s tail. While on the night journey, Muhammad received divine visions from various prophets and then from Allah himself. These visions comprise essential teachings of the Quran.
The white winged-horse Devadatta is the mount of Kalki - the final avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu.
