Blink, You Won't Miss it ... Intuition Project #3
Urgency, late birds, silence as an answer, and clearing conditions that block your intuition.
A robin is outside my window each morning just before dawn. He sings up the sun for 5 to 10 minutes before moving on. The early bird gets the worm.
Even now, out my window, a robin is plucking worms from the ground moistened by a late spring sleet. Except, it’s mid-morning. I marvel at how perfectly the robin matches the gray dirt and russet, dried oak leaves. This could be my serenading friend. Robins are so bold and straightforward. We try to follow their example.
Following our intuition requires boldness, but boldness motivated by fear can lead us astray. A fear of missing out brings an unnecessary sense of urgency.
Blink, you won’t miss it…
We believe that intuition is the first thought that comes to us. We think, If I blink I’ll miss it. This is the idea that intuition comes as a first impression. Here the adage “first thought, best thought” comes into play. The first idea that comes to us must be the right one because, we reason, it comes to us before the mind gets in the way.
This is a belief known as “first-instinct fallacy.” Scientifically, we can find just as many cases for the first thought being wrong as we can for the first thought being right.

In his book Think Again, Adam Grant shares research of students falling prey to first-instinct fallacy. When taking a test, the majority of students think that revising their first answer will hurt their score. Thus, they are hesitant to change their answers. This hesitancy is unfounded. In a review of thirty-three scientific studies, the majority of test answer changes were from WRONG to RIGHT. The students that were brave enough to rethink their first thought performed better than if they hadn’t done so.
