What happened last night…

A random song greets me as I wake up. It draws from the ethers of liminal dream space. Are you gonna go my way? The guitar riffs, drums, Lenny’s wailing voice are all there. I went to bed asking for a story to share in this article. Then this song.

I’m listening to the song while writing now.“I have come to save the day and I won’t leave until I’m done… You got to breathe and have some fun… We must engage and rearrange and turn this planet back to one…We’ve got to dance and be in love.” Kravitz proclaims himself a prophet of play and love.

4:00am and I’m not falling back asleep. I slip into meditation, calling on the goddess Tara and her treasure vase. Before my mind’s eye the golden jewel-filled vase morphs into a wooden chalice. The holy grail, I realize. The cup of the Knight’s Templar fabled to cure all disease and grant immortality.

Somewhere outside of time between sleeping and waking, a memory returns. I’m fourteen and visiting an enormous church next to my high school. An acquaintance has invited me. I am curious, not about how to join their faith, but about the nature of it. I’m a tourist, admittedly. The pastor is preaching to the group of teens prior to setting them loose in the game room. It’s blatant bribery.

He asks, “How do you know Jesus is real?” Clear as a bell, I hear within the core of my being, “Because I feel him in my heart.” Me, the agnostic tourist, has this knowing. Hands shoot up. I sit on mine. There’s no way I’m speaking in this lion’s den. I hold my breath. Surely someone else here has heard the same thing? It seems so obvious. No one. Not a single teenager can come up with anything beyond, “Because the Bible tells us so.” I’m astonished. The kids stop looking for Jesus once they enter the game room. I drive by that church for the next two years, and don’t bother to give it a passing glance.

Intuitions come to us in myriad forms. These examples of memory, music, and vision just barely scratch the surface. Are you listening? watching? sensing?
