Chickadee is the name for birds from the Paridae family that live in North America, and they are in the same family as “tit” or “titmouse” birds found across the northern hemisphere and in Africa. For those of you that don’t live in North America, the symbolism discussed here carries over to the tits and titmice near you.

The Cherokee people’s name for this bird is “tsigili’i” [1]. This and the English name “chickadee” are both attempts to mimic the bird’s call with its name. Symbolically this is about being able to tell others who we are and to speak for ourselves. Think about making a name for yourself. All of this speaks to the zodiac sign of Gemini.

Another way to interpret this is calling things like you see them (or in this case “hear” them). Chickadee are classically linked with truth telling.

It has been a heavy couple days astrologically. Saturn joined Mars in the sky on Sunday and then joined Mercury on Monday. Saturn signifies the dense metal lead in alchemy. Saturn makes us show up for what is necessary but not fun. We had an intense desire to race ahead thanks to fiery Mars in the sign of Aries the ram. Unfortunately, mature Saturn says “no” to rushing in. Saturn slows down Mercury’s mental ability and agility. You may have found yourself hesitating to make decisions.

Catalyst for Change

The alchemist archetype herself is a catalyst for change and she is the one changing. The alchemist is a scientist studying the world and the one being studied. The alchemist herself is the fire, the stove, the vessel, and the material.

Alchemy is defined as the transformation of a base material to an ennobled material - moving from the mundane to the divine. This transformation takes place by the ritualistic use of fire in a furnace. Alchemists often worked with metals, but also drew from infinite sources in nature.

Science and Spirituality Merged

The alchemist archetype works with the physical substances and the five senses, and she consults mystical sources. The alchemist knows she’s working with divine power and acts in accordance with that power. Alchemical experiments are ceremonies. Astrology and the movements of the heavens matter for the timing of alchemical procedures. Goddesses, gods, spirits and angels are consulted in the work. The breath of spirit is needed for the transformation to occur.

A gift of the alchemist archetype is that they don’t see a conflict between science and spirituality. Alchemy was born before there was such a distinction. Both science and spirituality seek to answer the great questions of the universe and the underlying nature of all things. Both inhabit the border between the known and the unknown. Both seek union with greater wisdom.

Shadow of the Alchemist Archetype

The alchemist archetype in the shadow wants transformation to progress in a linear “point A to point B” fashion. Here she is goal-oriented and impatient to reach the end without delay. Despite the fact that she is working in an inherently experimental field - which requires failure to learn - she would rather have a formula for success. A fixation on the goal and need for a formula causes those of us working with the alchemist archetype to miss the entire point. It is through the uncertainty, the surprising events, and round-about processes that our desire for the goal itself is transformed.

In alchemy, there is a great detail of secrecy and coded language. Alchemists (like scientists) have a complex vocabulary and set of symbols. It requires a great deal of study just to learn how to read an alchemical recipe, and alchemists throughout time have been incredibly protective of their work. This hoarding of knowledge, shrouding discoveries in secrecy, and talking down to amateurs is the shadow of the alchemist archetype.

There is also a dance with unethical behavior, in that the alchemist as scientist seeks to have power over nature and bend nature to his will. The goal of redemption is distorted into domination. This desire for control manifests when the work becomes entirely self-focused. When alchemy is solely about your personal healing and transcendence, you miss the greater, cosmic calling of the alchemist archetype.

Letting Go of the Outcome

In the light, the alchemist archetype understands that the soul works in circles. It is common practice for the alchemist to take the finished product - gold, the philosopher’s stone, the elixir of life - and put it back into the fire. This is called the “rotatio” or the “round”. By refining and refining again the magical end of the work, the alchemist purifies her desire for the goal. When you find yourself fixated on the outcome, remember the alchemist’s wisdom. Give what you’ve attained back over to the fire. Let it go. Lose yourself and the goal to the work.

Subjectivity and Objectivity

Science was born from alchemy, but has forgotten its roots. In science, we believe we must be objective all of the time. The gifted alchemist understands that pure objectivity is not possible, we are always in the work to one degree or another. There is wisdom however, in getting some objective distance from our healing and transformation work at times. Being more intellectual and dry helps us gain new perspective. There is also wisdom in embracing our fully subjective experience of transformation. We are working on our inner selves and there’s no denying it. The gifted alchemist archetype navigates this spectrum freely.

Sharing Esoteric Knowledge

The alchemist in the light knows that instructions for transformation can be dangerous to the uninitiated. The coded language and hidden meanings are meant to be revealed over time as the initiate is ready. This is so true in spiritual work of all kinds such as shamanic journeying, meditation, yoga, etc. The alchemist archetype within encourages us to respect and take our time learning secret knowledge. Once we have this knowledge, it’s our duty to share it judiciously, so that others can benefit.

Giving Your Soul to the Work

The Greek work Meraki (pronounced “may-rah-key”) means the essence of ourselves that we pour into our work. This is the blood, sweat and tears, the heart and soul, that we invest. This is where the word “sacrifice” is not about what we lose, but about what we offer wholeheartedly on the altar of the sacred. This is where we give ourselves over entirely to the work.

The gifted alchemist not only gives the outcome, but also her whole being to what she’s passionate about. The alchemical work is no longer about her own transcendence and enlightenment, but about the redemption of the world. She seeks to ennoble the world around her by seeking the divine in the heart of matter. There is no separation between the physical and the spiritual. This is the ultimate ending, middle and beginning of all alchemical processes - unification.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna (the divine avatar of the god Vishnu) says, ”I am the ritual and the sacrifice; I am true medicine and the mantram. I am the offering and the fire which consumes it, and the one to whom it is offered.”

All is one and the same in alchemy.

Ancient Origins of Alchemy

In ancient times, experimentation with nature - animals, stones, materials, plants - was part of ritualistic magic practices. When the transformative power of fire was added to the equation, alchemy was born.

Humans have wielded fire for well over a million years. Cooking is the most ancient form of alchemy. Forging metals is a bit “newer” invention. The earliest evidence of copper smithing is 9000-9500 years ago in North America and in the Middle East. The alchemist archetype has been around for a long time and is found all over the world.

There are long records of alchemical practices in China and India. Between 100-1300 CE, Chinese emperors funded alchemists for the production of brass and often required they be licensed. In India, there is evidence of forging bronze in 2300 BCE with the heyday of alchemy being in the 10th Century CE. Experienced metallurgists in India were Tantric yoga practitioners and alchemical work was absolutely ingrained in their spiritual practice.

Ancient Egyptians were also experienced metallurgists. Their alchemical work also included the practice of embalming. There is an ancient text telling how the goddess Isis gave birth to alchemy in the “city of the holy technique” when she negotiated with an angel to receive an alchemical recipe for resurrecting her husband Osiris. Bits of the recipe survive to this day.

Alchemists have also worked with fire and furnaces for thousands of years in North and South America. Copper and gold ornaments and tools were forged ceremonially in the first millennia CE. Pottery making is another form of alchemical practice that carries into indigenous cultures to this day.

So as you see, the alchemist archetype is found all around the world throughout the whole of human history!

Wild Mercury. Quicksilver. Symbolic of the spirit. A slippery metal that splatters at the slightest nudge. Finding its way back together. Formless. Extracting gold from ore. Linked to madness and humor.

In my story a herd of cattle shows up out of thin air. In the Greek origin story of Hermes (aka Mercury) the cattle disappear into thin air.

Let me start at the beginning. It was like any other morning for months as I recorded the Heart of the Alchemist Archetype audio course. I sat at my desk, reviewing notes, and delivering into the mic the significance of Mercury in alchemical work.

I was animated despite being alone. Mercury has a way of lifting the spirits. Just talking about him/her/them brings levity. Smiling to myself, I finished up just in time to don my jacket and boots and head to the barn.

The vet was coming for spring checkups for my two horses. Kenai, our vivacious white pup with big red spots, loaded into the ATV with me. We drove down the always quiet driveway. I was turning the last corner when …

Surprise!

There stood a couple dozen cattle - right in the middle of the road. Not budging. Kenai was shivering with excitement and I was laughing. What in the world? This had NEVER happened before. None of our close neighbors have cows. Just to be sure I called Annie. Her smaller herd three miles away were all accounted for.

Kenai slipped his collar and ran at the cows. They ignored him. I stopped, got out, and approached. They stood inquisitive as if I were the strange intruder. Then they moved toward me, quite brazenly. A black one started frisking my pockets for treats - I kid you not. A cream colored one licked my hand, expecting a cookie. They acted like they were someone’s pets, not at all like livestock in ranch country are expected to behave.

I was delighted in their company - such squat, rotund little beasts and wonderfully sweet faces. I chatted with them for awhile, not caring if I seemed nuts. I couldn’t catch my dog. I pulled out a granola bar and crinkled the wrapper. Kenai was tricked into thinking I had a treat for him. He came back to me weaving in between cows. The cows crowded in closer, long tongues licking their lips. They also recognized the crinkling. What cows know the sound of a wrapper as a signal for treats? Crazy! I got Kenai’s leash on.

He and I followed their muddy tracks to the creek. The tracks led upstream. The cows must have come a long ways from the next valley over. I called the sheriff’s department and, after a bit of phone tag, talked with the animal control officer. She had no idea whose cows they were but promised to research it and call back.

Mystery of the Missing Cattle

I headed back to my house to await news. It wasn’t until I returned indoors that it dawned on me. On the day of his birth Hermes (aka Mercury) stole his brother Apollo’s herd of cattle! To trick Apollo and disguise the theft, Hermes put human boots on the cattle’s feet facing backwards so the tracks would be disguised and lead the wrong way.

At the exact time I was recording about Mercury, the cows were wandering onto our ranch. The spirit of Mercury had literally come in the form of a large herd of friendly, curious cows. The details of following their tracks, the mystery of their origin, the phone tag, and having to play a trick on my dog all resonated. Mercury is all about tricks, mysteries, communication, and solving puzzles. So cool.

Just when I start to forget that everything is connected, a brilliant synchronicity like this knocks me off my feet. I love how the universe works!

It took the animal control officer most of the day to find the owners. Then it took the owners the whole evening to do multiple trips with a stock trailer to haul their herd back home. It wasn’t until after dark that our little ranch was cow-less once again.

Alchemy Brings us Into the World

Working with alchemist archetype means looking for ways the spirits of the work show up in the world around us, communicating experientially.

So many folks these days think that alchemical transformation is all inner work. They couldn’t be any further from the truth. There has to be a combination of the symbolic AND the literal. We need to work physically AND psychically, externally AND internally. The alchemist archetype is about ennobling ourselves AND ennobling the world. We have to be in touch with what is living and lived. All of life is interconnected.

Pisces Australis, the constellation of the southern fish, mouth open receiving a deluge of waters of wisdom. The fish hangs in the night sky below Aquarius, the water-bearer. A woman pouring a pitcher of water. The fish swims up to catch it.

When spiritual insights come, we are awake enough to know the preciousness. This is especially true after time in the desert. All of a sudden the tap turns on. Sweet nectar of insight floods our parched systems.

Synchronicities come by the dozen. The hawk on the drive home echoes the hawk in your dream echoes the hawk that’s in the book you’re reading and the oracle card you just pulled. The muses come and bless you with a myriad of brilliant ideas. All of a sudden you know how to break the spell of decades of cultural conditioning. Your shadow shrinks as the light of awareness pours in.

You know what I’m talking about - those times when we’re flush with intuition, creative inspiration, and spiritual guidance. It feels amazing and we get hooked.

Discernment. We forget to apply it to spiritual wisdom. Soon, simply floating still, mouth agape, and receiving spiritual knowledge is not enough. We start swimming off in pursuit of more.

And there are server farms and influencers and YouTubers all over the globe that are poised to lure you in and feed you more, more, more. Beware. Remember discernment.

There is a moment when we switch from receiving spiritual wisdom to consuming it. It goes from generating awe to fostering an inferiority complex. Do you know when that last happened for you?

I follow a butterfly down a hole through the earth. We slide and tumble, then I find my feet and walk meandering switchbacks deeper still. We come to an alcove with a sheet of water over the exit - a roaring waterfall.

A tiger comes from behind, and rubs along my side with her head like a house cat. She glances my way telling me to follow though the water.

Then a no man’s land. Gray, eerily still. I sense movement. Look closer. It’s a little girl nestled into a depression in the gray. Curled in a ball, still, waiting for kindness. The butterfly lands beside her. The tiger lays down on the other side and keeps watch. I kneel down and ask her what I can do to help…

I can’t really tell you how I got into doing soul retrievals 20 years ago. It was one of those things that found me. I’m not especially drawn to kids - definitely not preschool teacher material. But I do love caring for the lost infants and children of the spirit world. They are the bits and pieces of you that get lost along the way.

I become a mother for a time to these lost souls, just the time it takes to heal what’s needed and bring them home. It is one of the great honors of my life, to get to love a soul part on her journey back to you.

As part of the two-year shamanic practitioner training I completed in 2007, we learned all number of shamanic healing methods - soul retrieval, extraction, cord cutting, energy clearing, space clearing, exorcism, power animal and spirit guide retrieval, plant spirit healing, genetic line healing, brain rewiring, land and house blessings, and more. Before and after that, I studied with multiple shamanic teachers and learned animal communication, dreamwork, team journeywork, crystal healing, and more.

Out of all those methods, I always found doing soul retrievals to be the most natural of processes. Sure it takes a good deal of mental, emotional and physical energy, and at the same time it is effortless.

The soul parts are ready

The soul parts are always right there waiting on the other side, in the spirit world. They line up. They want to come back. They are glad to help.

Historically, shamanic practitioners talked about soul retrieval journeys as long wild goose chases. They’d carry soul traps, nets, and lassos with them to catch soul parts on the lam. Shamanic practitioners would have to bribe and cajole monsters to set the soul parts free. Battles would ensue. It was an heroic affair from all accounts.

But I wouldn’t know that from my decades of doing soul retrieval healings for others. The soul parts are right there waiting every time. Every time they participate in the process. Every time they are excited to share the gifts they are bringing back. Some even help gather and heal other soul parts. Every time multiple spirit animals show up to help.

It’s a collaborative affair. The process is what author and storyteller Sharon Blackie describes as the “heroine’s journey”. It’s not about conquering, but healing. It’s not about the individual, but the collective.

Because you’ve been doing the work

This has a lot more to do with you than with me. You’re the heroine in this story. You have your own skills and talents. You’ve been doing your own healing and growth work for a long time.

In ancient times, the first part of any soul retrieval process involved the shamanic practitioner joining the client and them doing a “calling the spirit home” ceremony. They’d rattle, sing, play music, ring bells, and call out the client’s own name. This expressed the deep desire of the client to have her soul parts back, and this often was enough to achieve healing. When it wasn’t, the shamanic practitioner would undertake the dramatic wild goose chase soul retrieval journey.

Today, you all are constantly doing your own calling the spirit home ceremonies.

This may be an entirely private undertaking of journaling, dreamwork, shadow work, visioning, and intention setting. It may be a more public effort, done in therapy sessions and workshops with the help of trusted guides. Either way, you’re doing the work. It all has to do with the desire to be whole again, to be reunited with the carefree, authentic child-like version of yourself. These improvisational calling the spirit home ceremonies regularly work to accomplish full reunion with lost parts of yourself.

And sometimes… an assist is needed.

That’s when I am called in. The beautiful thing is that all that work you’ve already done matters.

I don’t have to go on a heroic quest. Your soul parts have heard your call. They come right to the edge of the spirit world and just need some help and company making the last stretch of the journey. My work is to listen to and recount their story, to facilitate the remaining transformation needed, and to document the amazing gifts they have for you. Then I carry them home to you.

After how hard I know you all have worked, I am so glad to tend to your soul. The healing journey is not meant to be one of solitude. You are meant to receive nurturance and understanding, to know you are loved. That is where the cosmic mother and I join forces on your behalf.

It’s unavoidable to see all the ways the spirituality and wellness community has let us down. I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with those of you disillusioned with a spiritual teacher and/or teaching. I have had my own experiences too. Even though this space is outside of traditional, organized religion and the harms perpetrated there, it is still a space made of humans. Greed, hypocrisy, hunger for power, hubris - these follow us humans wherever we go.

But before we get into that, what are we calling this space? Is it simply “spirituality” or is it spiritual but not religious (SBNR)? Is it the wellness or consciousness community? Or do we call it mysticism or occult? Maybe it’s just called energy work, shadow work, inner work, transformational work, or embodiment? Heck. I have no clue. And for the record, no one does. For now, I’m going to use alternative spirituality as that identifies how it is outside of religion and maintains the “spirituality” name that most people connect with.

There is no consensus on a name, but there is cohesion of belief. There are organizing principles that spiritual but not religious teachers and influencers share and I’ll give these shortly.

Alternative spirituality has been and is providing a valuable container for those of us disillusioned by organized religion.

But what happens when you find yourself deconstructing that which replaced the organized religion you’ve already deconstructed?

What happens when some or all of these spiritual beliefs and teachings fail you? What happens when the dark side of the teacher, healer, practitioner or influencer appears?

In this article, I offer signs that you are in the process of deconstructing your relationship with alternative spirituality.

What does it mean to deconstruct? It means to doubt, ask questions, seek answers elsewhere, experience a crisis of faith, fell isolated, rage, disbelieve, grieve, and heal.

For most of us a deconstruction happens as a result of one or both of these: (1) The spiritual teachings fail to ease our suffering despite following them religiously (2) A spiritual teacher, practitioner, and/or healer betrays us.

Focusing on the sovereign archetype is a great way to explore the astrological themes of this time. The zodiac sign of Aries is about independence and autonomy.

The planet Neptune has entered into Aries, signaling a new 14 year cycle, and Saturn just entered Aries for a 2 year stay. This Friday February 20, these two influential planets conjoined in Aries. Soon the Sun will move into the sign of Aries, symbolizing the beginning of the zodiacal year. Along with the personal planets soon beginning their annual visits to Aries, let’s just say there’s a lot of Aries energy ramping up.

Authenticity: Showing Up for You

The word “sovereign” means “supreme ruler”. This archetype reigns over our free will and choices. Here we know all the ways have the power to change our destiny.

“Sovereign” also means “acting or done independently and without outside interference”. This is the definition that gives us even more to work with. Are you committed to breaking free from familial and cultural conditioning? This is the sovereign archetype within asserting your independence.

How important is authenticity to you? How hard do you work to break the habit of people pleasing to show up for yourself? This is also the sovereign at work within.

Inherent Dignity

Cole Arthur Riley opens her book Black Liturgies: Prayers, Poems, and Meditations for Staying Human with this contemplation:

“I don’t know what dignity is. Not cognitively. But I know what it feels like. To be loved, to receive honor, to be encountered as human, not because of any demonstration or performance of such, but because, in mystery, your very being is a miracle, your existence a delicate stitch in the cosmos. Dignity will never depend on anyone’s belief in it, certainly not your own…It is inherent.”

The sovereign archetype within us is what carries our inherent dignity. This is the power to rise up out of the ashes and assert that we matter, that our lives matter despite what the world, its systems, and its societies tell us. The sovereign has the power to usurp self-loathing and self-doubt and replace them with self-love. We are worthy no matter what.

Challenges of the Sovereign

The sovereign also has its challenges. There is so much that is out of our control, but so many ways in which we struggle to maintain control.

All of us have an innate desire to make our lives unfold how we’d like. At times, we find ourselves trying to dictate how other people talk to us and treat us. We plan and strategize so that things go smoothly. We want to know what to expect and when to expect it. All of this falls under the purview of the shadow sovereign.

We get caught up in planning and managing life. Our attention goes outside of ourselves.

The Strategist Archetype

An important sub-archetype of the sovereign is the “strategist archetype”. It is a sub-archetype because it is more limited in scope and carries important themes within the sovereign.

When we get caught up in the excitement of strategizing and planning we think the choices are in the details. The choice is not about the exact date we initiate a new project or who we initiate it with or even what that project is. Uncertainty is inevitable. We can’t plan for it all despite how much the strategist archetype within wants to.

The important choice is the SPIRIT in which we enter into that project and the way in which we navigate surprise obstacles. It’s not about managing to minimize uncertainty. It’s about how we manage ourselves in uncertainty.

Historically, it was the sovereign’s duty to provide for the people of the land and protect them from famine, natural disaster, and invading armies. A true sovereign knows that instability is inevitable. The work is to have a strategy for weathering the uncertainty while leading with integrity.

The Sovereign Sets Boundaries

Most of us think that setting boundaries has to do with telling people how to treat us and making them respect our “no”. This is the quickest way to give away our power. We end up trying to manage someone else’s behavior. A futile endeavor indeed. When we step outside ourselves to force our will on others, it usually doesn’t work.

In the shadow the sovereign archetype says to her friends, “Here are my rules and I expect you to abide by them. If you don’t there are consequences. I’ll be really mad at you, I’ll make you feel bad, I’ll get on your case, and I may even stop being friends with you.”

In the light the sovereign archetype says to herself, “I am called to be in a friendship with this beautiful person before me that I know also has flaws and wounds and hangups. I trust that I’ll be able to navigate what comes as a result of opening up to this love.”

In the light the sovereign archetype keeps us inside our own boundaries, our own kingdom. We refrain from stepping outside of ourselves to manage someone else’s actions.

The Saboteur Archetype

When I originally taught archetypes in a prescribed system, I taught about the “saboteur”, which was a maddening affair. That name is a trap that results in affirmation of the problem without providing solutions. When talking about the saboteur students ran in circles railing against how they procrastinate, doubt, ruminate and stall out.

By identifying with the name “saboteur” we fixate on the ways we undermine ourselves. This makes sense because the definition of sabotage is “to deliberately destroy, damage or obstruct something.”

Analyzing the patterns of the saboteur archetype is a maze that gets us nowhere. We know we’re making the wrong choices, but berating ourselves for doing so doesn’t help.

The saboteur archetype is another sub-archetype of the sovereign. The saboteur defines aspects of the shadow of the sovereign. Meanwhile, the sovereign archetype as a whole gives solutions through her gifts.

Power of Choice

The sovereign archetype is one we all have within. It is a core archetype of human nature. We all have free will. Even when our material choices are taken away and life is not going how we want, we still have a force within that determines how we will approach, think, and feel about what we are experiencing.

• The amount of hope and despair we hold and conjure is a choice.

• Whether to open up or be protective is a choice.

• To love or fear is a choice.

We go through so many choices in any given hour, it is no wonder that we miss most of them. It’s no wonder that mindfulness is something we have to learn and practice. It’s overwhelming and sometimes paralyzing to think about how many choices we make and how those impact our lives. Hello karma!

Great world religious leaders and avatars have come to teach us about the power and consequences of our choices. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna stands on a battlefield at the precipice of war and gives a sermon on what choices matter. In the end, it’s all about the choice to follow divine will and surrender the fruits of our actions.

The Buddha teaches the paramount importance of choosing compassion.

This is the peak of the sovereign archetype in the light.

The sovereign in the light is not interested in ruling over our lives and others. She’s interested in following her soul and the soul of the world.

It is no surprise that the seeker archetype is one of the most difficult to define. Pinning down this roving icon becomes more complicated the longer you spend following her this way and that. She’s like the seed of a dandelion cast on the wind.

The Lost Seeker Archetype

When she starts out, the seeker archetype continually wanders to find something undefined. The unevolved, shadow seeker isn’t sure what she is seeking. She knows that she is after something, but committing to what that something is can prove tricky. This results in her feeling like something is lost. That something may be her. She becomes the consummate lost soul.

Typically the seeker is certain that the search has something to do with learning about the way life, the world, and maybe even the cosmos. She may refuse to get more specific than that for fear of pigeonholing her quest. The seeker realizes that by framing the question, she is already determining the answer.

This ambiguity does not water down the confidence of the people influenced by the seeker. The seeker carries at her core an intense inner drive to continue on regardless. This is part of the gift of this archetype.

The Seeker’s Quest for Answers

The seeker has a habit of asking unanswerable questions and not allowing them to rest. The seeker wants to know why life is the way it is not just for humans, but often for the entire universe. The questions that the seeker asks are not necessarily questions that can be answered such as “Why are we here?” and “How did life begin?” and “What other life is out there?”

Just because we can’t answer these questions, doesn’t mean they are is not worth seeking after. These inquiries bring a deep sense of meaning for all of humanity, calling us to something greater than ourselves and bringing us out of our day-to-day existence. The seeker archetype serves us all in this way.

Asking about the meaning of life brings meaning via the search. This is the classic, “the journey is the destination.”

Astronomers as seekers use highly evolved telescopes to look and listen far out into the universe. They are trying to find out, “Is there more life out there?” Think of how many astronomers looked for many decades and died without ever coming to the answer. That doesn’t mean that their search was fruitless. They gained so much along the way - wonder, immersion, discovery, bliss, anticipation, and more.

Literal to Symbolic Search for Truth

The seeker often starts out her journey expecting to find truth and answers some where; that is to say in some physical location. She moves about the earthly plane hoping truth will be found under a rock, in the heart of a city, swept up in romance, bowing at the feet of a guru, following the road to a holy site, gazing at a wonder of the world, or laying in a field of sunflowers. The truth she seeks is personal truth.

The maturation of those with the seeker archetype brings the realization that the search is not an outward search. The ends of the earth can be reached. The seeker turns inward to travel beyond the senses and beyond this world. She finds a limitless terrain vast enough to match her enormous questions.

As she evolves, the seeker archetype looks for a thing, a feeling, a knowing, an experience called truth. This is not truth with a lowercase t mind you, but Truth with a capital T. She goes beyond personal truth to universal Truth. Concrete physical facts or data that satisfy scientists and engineers are a bore for the seeker. She is different than the student archetype in that she doesn’t like a syllabus and a course schedule.

The answers she seeks leave concern for tangible things. The seeker wants to know what she cannot touch with the five senses, and this desire ultimately leads her beyond this earthly plane.

The Wanderer Archetype

One of the variations of the seeker archetype is the wanderer. The wanderer archetype has less fire for an outcome than the seeker. She is lulled into a quiet, comfort that comes via endless travel be it outward or inward travel. The wanderer is more comfortable with uncertainty than certainty, which is both a blessing and a curse. The wanderer can abandon loved ones and commitments. She forgets the important truth that connection and community bring wisdom too.

The comfort with uncertainty helps those with the wanderer archetype to practice the spiritual grace of detachment, embracing the present moment. As long as the wanderer stays intent on not being attached to being detached, gifts of the now flow freely.

The Seeker’s Light & Shadow

Suffering comes when the shadow seeker longs to be like everyone else, wishing she could be content with the simple, stationary life. This is not an archetype meant for putting down roots, although friends and community may be exactly what the seeker needs to keep from becoming a lost soul.

The shadow side of the seeker is also someone who doesn’t let go of the answer she expects. If she sets out to find a treasure chest full of gold and instead finds self-love, she misses the opportunity. When she thinks the answer is “out there” and refuses to return home, she misses the cosmic Truth that what she is searching for was under her feet the whole time. She keeps trying to find the person she thinks she should be instead of who the journey has made her into.

The light aspect of the seeker archetype is the brilliant opening up to the universe. An expansion occurs for all of humanity when just one person begins to question. This creates a ripple, then a storm of cosmic Truth that helps the whole wake up.

Detachment and openness are the light side of the seeker. The seeker brings solace in the aloneness that sometimes comes along the path. The tie to something larger than herself brings faith and courage to the seeker archetype.

In this article on forest dwelling hawks called “accipiters”, I cover what the family of accipiters signifies spiritually. I also share the spirit animal symbolism of Sharp-shinned Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, and American Goshawks.

A Ferocious Visitor

A scuffle on the ground. A hawk flies out of the chicken yard. Not a good sign. My son panics and asks, “did one of the Ninas get attacked?” The dog is milling about, doing nothing to deter the giant hawk that’s now perched overhead. The hawk is clearly determined to finish her meal. Her fierce gaze pins me in place.

The amount of inner turmoil I’m in is intense. I want the chicken’s death to not be in vain. The hawk is gorgeous. I’m in love. I want her to fill her belly. My heart aches for my son who adores our sweet Black Star chickens. I am terrified for the chickens huddled in the coop. How traumatizing for them is it to have the hawk still outside? Can they hear her tearing their sister’s flesh apart?

Sweet babies. They have been loyal layers for over three years even during the depths of winter. This is no small gift. Where does my allegiance lie? With our beloved pets or the astonishing wild?

In the end, I leave the hawk alone to feast while I get my son situated in the house. I walk back out with my camera. The hawk lifts back into the tree. She poses, demands worship. I take the chicken carcass out of the yard. How are the girls in the coop? They are glad to have their water and food moved inside and are relatively okay considering. I, on the other hand, am rattled for the rest of the day. My heart and mind swirl with shock, awe, reverence and sadness.

This visitor was an immature goshawk, the first of which I’ve ever seen. She (I’m guessing gender based on size) is a member of the family of forest-dwelling hawks known as “accipiters.”

Forest Hawk Spirit Animal

Accipiters are different from the soaring buteo family that includes red-tailed hawks. Accipiter hawks are built for short bursts of speed in tight places. We don’t typically see them soaring above or perching in the open like red-tails. Accipiters are spotted darting through the understory or camouflaged on a perch in the forest canopy.

There is something about the human spirit that cannot stand oppression. We long to be free. It is a part of human nature. However, not every human has it in her nature to rise up with such force as to be able to redirect the course of an entire nation. We all can, however, do it for ourselves.

The liberator archetype sets you free from fears, self-criticism, and self-loathing. To understand this for yourself, think of the parts of you that are cruel dictators and that perpetuate negative self-talk. Recognize that there is a liberator inside you rising up to set you free from this internalized oppression.

The liberator archetype in its fullest expression is a powerful, charismatic, compelling, and ruthless force.

The Stages of Liberation

Awareness

The liberator archetype brings a vision of equality and freedom for all that is unmatched. She births this vision while away at university or when traveling beyond her homeland. Education helps the liberator expand her awareness beyond the cage walls of the oppressive system. By freeing her mind she sees how to free her people.

The liberator archetype isn’t just about leaders of epic revolutions, she also works on a personal level. Your fears, illusions, dogmas, and dependencies hold you captive. These are born of ignorance. The liberator inspires you to become educated, so that you can see the truth.

Buddhism speaks of naked awareness, an ability to see things as they actually are. Cultivating naked awareness paves the way to inner freedom. To become enlightened by naked vision is to be liberated.

Imprisonment and Exile

The next theme involves a devastating setback. For Nelson Mandela and Ghandi this was their literal imprisonment. For Malala, this was being shot in the head by a masked gunman and her exile from Pakistan.

The ruling authority acts in great force to squash the rebellion and target the leaders of the rebellion directly. This turns some liberators into martyrs when their death by assassination occurs, further fueling the revolution.

When working with the liberator archetype within you, your initial push to break free is met by a stronger opposing force that clings to the status quo. Self-abusive thoughts can be relentless. You tell yourself to quit daydreaming and to deal with things as they are. The busy mind haunts you day and night.

You might be tempted to stay in the cell in your mind, and give up. The old family stories, cultural myths, and past traumas hold you hostage. They prey upon your fears. The cage door is open, but you can’t walk out.

You don’t have to be literally locked in a jail cell to know the power of the liberator. There are fears and conditioning that keep you from living your full potential. This can be the most disheartening phase because you may think you’re failing before you even begin. If the masters have taught you anything, know you need to keep going. As Mandela’s autobiography is titled, it is a “Long Walk to Freedom.”

When the liberator in the light sticks to her mission, the autocracy loses the taste for holding the liberator hostage. The sentence is up and the liberator walks free.

Campaign

Once the liberator is out, she doesn’t turn her back on the inequality and brutality others are experiencing. Her personal, regional fight for freedom broadens to a larger population. She campaigns tirelessly for freedom and tells everyone about the plight of oppressed people.

Malala Yousafzai, Nadia Murad, Nelson Mandela, Ghandi, and the Dali Lama - each and every one of them traveled internationally to garner support for their causes.

When working with the liberator personally, you campaign by talking with others (friends, therapists, spiritual directors) about the atrocities of the inner oppressor, your panic attacks, and worry. You campaign to receive support from others in your quest for inner freedom, and you plead with your soul for a better way of life.

Revolution

During the revolution, you are in the shadow of the liberator archetype if you focus on using force to overthrow the oppressors. The shadow liberator loathes the people in power and uses vengeance and hate to rally support. If you are acting out of anger, you risk becoming what you abhor. Violence, terror, and victimization are tools the shadow liberator uses under the guise of liberation.

The liberator archetype in the light motivates the masses with ideals. The goal becomes bigger than ousting the few at the top, it is a desire to change the human race for the better. Peace, liberty, justice, and freedom for all are what the struggle is about. The evolved liberator archetype lives by the same ideals she wishes to see manifest - kindness, generosity, patience, and pacifism. She looks to change the system by first transforming her hatred into compassion.

Liberator as Governor

When the revolution is successful, the liberator moves into office to instate a new world order. Some of the greatest liberators have made great leaders, but many liberators turn into tyrants.

A contemporary to Nelson Mandela, Robert Mugabe also fought against apartheid. Both men succeeded, but here their paths diverge. Mandela lead the new South African government for one 5-year term and resigned as promised. The next South African president was chosen via a free and fair election. Mugabe held on to power for over twenty-five years, and he became known for acts of brutality, political corruption, and denigration of civil liberties.

Establishing a new ruling body is a challenging time for the liberator because he knows how to shake systems up, not establish them. However, he knows that his leadership as a symbol of freedom is necessary for a time to convince the people that true change has come.

This stage of the liberator archetype is the most critical, for the actions here will determine whether the cycle of oppression will begin over again or be broken.

When working with the liberator personally, remember not to replace the old demands you made on yourself with new ones. Hold the ideals you’ve fought so hard to embrace.

Live your life by a living ethos instead of rigid rules. Be more than tolerant. Be compassionate towards all sides of yourself, even the cruel ones. And, help others on the road to both outer and inner freedom.

Rocky Mountain Elk

How amazing it is to live in a place where herds of elk wander. Just the other day, driving home from town we stopped to watch a herd of 40-50 elk flow up the hillside and disappear into the woods. What a joy that my son gets to grow up among them. On evenings in the fall we sit on our deck and listen to their bugles and chatter.

Colorado has the largest elk population of any US state. Growing up near Denver, CO, I have fond memories of driving to Rocky Mountain National Park in the autumn to watch the elk rut and, more importantly, listen to them bugle. It is a stunning spectacle.

On the ranch in SW Colorado where I live now, elk are often around, but easily hidden by the trees. Their nickname as “ghosts of the forest” is so apt. We catch magical glimpses and listen to their chirping, until they vanish without a trace. Despite being the second largest species of the deer family at 600-1000 pounds, elk are incredibly quiet and fast movers.

Connection to What is Vast

Flowing across rough terrain in large herds as effortlessly as a school of fish through water, elk symbolism speaks just as much to the element of water as it does earth. Their bugles and various other chirps and squeaks echo through valleys like the songs of whales. There is a strange connection between cetaceans and elk, an eerie ancient wisdom that connects the oceanic and montane. They bring the spirit of something vast and unfathomable.

My Year with Tarot workshop involves working with one tarot card that’s just for you each month. There’s no telling all the creative ways the energy and messages of the card will show up in your life. For my own journey with tarot this year, I’m painting watercolors.

In your own Year with Tarot, you can research the symbolism, build altars to the cards, journal, collage, meditate, journey, and so much more. (I just want to note that art is not required! It’s just how I personally decided to connect in this year.) We meet twice per month to share the magic and miracles that come into your life as a result of communing with the tarot. No prior experience is necessary!

King of Swords! Griffins!

This was my card for the month of June and brought experiences of self-reflection and mental acuity. I engaged a practice of gaining rulership over my thoughts during my annual solitary retreat.

The Major Arcana card associated with the King of Swords is The Lovers which corresponds to the zodiac sign of Gemini. When I first sketched the whole griffin, I realized I’d screwed up and not gotten it in the center of the page. I asked my intuition what wanted to be on the rest of the page and the mirror image came to mind. Gemini and The Lovers card are both about the twin, the other, the mirror, so it all made perfect sense!

And the clouds for this air card? It was a risk to add those after I invested so much in the griffins. Painting the clouds was another opportunity for practicing mental focus and not allowing distractions or doubts derail the process.

The Star ⭐️

Meet the Southern Bald Ibis and the Sacred Ibis (black and white). In the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck, there is an ibis (a type of waterbird) that sits in a tree in the background. The ibis is a symbol of the Egyptian god Thoth who is known as the inventor of the arts and is said to have sung the world into being. This card brings creative inspiration, optimism, and bright ideas. Clearly I was inspired in the month of April to do lots of art!

6 of Pentacles

Four of my chickens and their eggs became the muses for the generosity of the 6 of pentacles in September. This card is associated with the moon came during eclipse season astrologically, which was a beautiful, cosmic synchronicity. In daily life, I found I had plenty of energy to offer my generous support to family members as they had big life transitions come up.

6 of Wands

The tigress of good fortune for the “Lord of Victory”. This card came in the month of August when my 23rd marriage anniversary was. It met me at a sweet spot in my relationship which has seen its fair share of trouble in the last couple of years. The tigress resting on the wands of power backed by the fiery violet flames became a welcome affirmation. I usually struggle with depicting mammals, so even making this piece felt like a victory over adversity.

8 of Wands - Lord of Swiftness

An obvious choice for the 8 of Wands... 8 Swifts! I don’t know why no tarot card animal deck has thought of this one. This was my card and painting for the month of July. One of my favorites to paint, I am delighted at how the light of the rainbow glows in the bellies of these beautiful beings. Like the wands in the 8 of Wands card, swifts gather together at dusk and descend en mass toward their target - a cozy roost in a tree, cliff or chimney - for the night.

This card with the rainbow symbolizes flashing moments of insight and my July was FULL of such wonderful spiritual messages. Reversed, this card symbolizes a sense of being “up in the air” (the wands are headed skyward). Some species of swifts can spend years on the wing never landing anywhere to perch. There was some of this in the month too - a feeling of not knowing how things were going land.

Page of Wands

This Panther Chameleon was my muse for the Page of Wands in May. Even though chameleons are slow moving and the Page of Wands is known for bringing about quick action and change, there was a synchronicity here for me. The Page of Wands came into the 3rd astrological house of my chart (I started the year with my birthday in March). Chameleons have lightning fast tongues and the 3rd house is about communication and speech! This was definitely borne out in my life experience. Fun fact... I realized once I started painting that the branch the chameleon is on is a perfect “wand”!

Page of Cups

The Page of Cups was my card for March. She’s a poet and artist, dreamer and visionary. For a number of reasons, I connect her with sea turtles. All pages are earthy spirits, and the suit of cups is associated with the element of water. There is a childlike innocence about sea turtles and somehow also a wisdom beyond their years. Pages are connected to the child archetype. In March, my family traveled to Disneyland to take my six year old son for his first visit. Talk about imagination and creativity! It was beautiful to see my son’s sense of wonder in the park, and lots of feelings (water) came up when it was time to leave.

A funnel weaver spider clings to the wall in the bedroom. My now seven-year-old son alerts to its looming presence. Catching her in a tall drinking glass, I watch the spider jump supernaturally fast to the bottom. I slide a paper between the rim of the glass and the wall. Then she rides quietly outside to be left in a sunny spot on the deck railing.

This has become a daily ritual for me, chauffeuring one bug or another out the door. The other day I caught two houseflies in a small mouthed vase. I swear they heard my telepathic ask to fly inside. Western conifer seed bugs that smell like bananas are common here. Not sure how so many get in the house, but I help them back outside cradled in a tissue as often as I can. There’s another small beetle that hitches rides in on the firewood. They go out to be spared the inferno.

What is small is really big.

There are so many bugs in the world, but each life has immense value. I’m enjoying the insects.

You know what’s actually been bugging me lately? Big online classes. By this, I mean a speaker presenting online to a large audience that listens passively. There a gross proliferation of these mega-classes. The pressure for spiritual teachers, healers, and coaches to scale continues to mount. It is a phenomenon that concerns me more and more.

If you don’t know what I mean when I talk about “scaling”, I am referring to the drive to register a large number of students. This serves two purposes for the teacher:

1. A greater sense of fulfillment: the more people they help, the bigger the impact and better service to the world they feel they are offering

2. More income

The teachers believe they can make money AND be of great service. Unfortunately, this is not as simple as it seems. Those of us in large audiences are not receiving that much help, and, all too often, we are being harmed.

Large online classes are getting it wrong. Here’s how:

Students in these big audiences are not receiving the connection we seek. Many of us who attend these online classes are untethered or even exiled from spiritual communities. We are lonely and isolated. And, 15-minute breakout groups and chat boxes DO NOT provide the type of deep, lasting spiritual connection that fills the gaping hole of belonging.

There’s the trouble of getting answers to questions. The teacher rarely has a chance to get to all the questions. I also know for a fact (because I’m one of them) that students don’t want to be on camera in front a big group of strangers, let alone be recorded. If the question is of a personal or sensitive nature, there’s a next to nil chance that any of us will raise our hands.

Lastly, the material in most of these online classes has the real potential to cause a spiritual emergency. Shadow work, trauma work, ancestral healing, energy healing, and opening one’s empathic abilities all bring up big issues. Without direct, personalized support and guidance in a safe environment, confronting these issues can be overwhelming and distressing.

In big online lectures, we have no direct contact with trained professionals. We are left trying to talk with other students in the online forums, which can be dangerous. I have more than one experience of an amateur healer with a lack of boundaries trying to “help”.

NOTE: When I say mega, big, mass, large, etc., I mean any online lecture-style class with around fifty or more passive audience members watching. This is a space where there is no chance of the teacher directly supporting all of the students.

The value of a single soul

What is the value of supporting and companioning a single soul? Priceless.

Then there is the trouble of craving and attachment to the material world. I can’t say for certain, but I sure wonder about the teachers that keep growing and growing and having larger and larger audiences. There’s a fair chance they’ve stepped off the spiritual path and are caught up in the world. Just sayin’.

There’s a reason the phrase “mega-classes” is lingering in my mind. These mass lectures aren’t so far from megachurches.

It’s time for a revolution

It is only in the last year that I’ve become more diligent about saving insect’s lives. Meditation shows me the value of all life on a deeper level, including the lives of arachnids and insects.

Am I saying you are bugs? Yes, and me too. It might seem a bit quirky or funny to say, but yes. I’m going with it. I have sat at my computer in countless mega-classes and felt like a tiny speck of life, unnoticeable, lost at sea, and easily replaceable.

My experiences combined with stories I’ve heard from clients, and, yes, my compassion for bugs continues to affirm my devotion to small online workshops. I know how important these small groups of 5-7 people are for our sense of belonging in a world that doesn’t always appreciate spiritual innovation.
